Take a peek at this years 2019 White Marlin Open from aboard the Moore Bills out of Ocean City, Maryland. This short film takes you from the scout to the hunt and everything in between. Filmed and edited by Craig Costantino with drone footage by Bill Whaley. This year was packed full of action. Got close a couple time but no money fish this year. A huge congratulations to our good friend Tommy Hinkle on the Fish Whistle taking it all for the second time in the White Marlin Category ! Other locals flew flags high taking the Dolphin and Tuna categories. Special thanks to Fin City Brewing for featuring the boat on the new "White Marlin Pale Ale" Can!

Living Up To Its Billing: The White Marlin Open - BOAT US ARTICLE

OCEAN CITY, Md — It's 8:30 a.m. and the 60-foot boat named "Moore Bills" has eight lines in the water, 60 miles off the Atlantic Ocean coast. This boat and crew left the harbor four hours ago, in search of a million-dollar fish.
That million-dollar prize isn't some sort of long odds lottery. Total prize money in the White Marlin Open is based upon the number of entries; in 2005 a 78.5-pound white marlin was worth $1,638,916. Three other times in tournament history the winning white marlin has paid at least $1.3 million.

Born in Havana, Cuba in 1958, Jose Wejebe grew up in a politically tumultuous time. Fidel Castro leading the Cuban revolution had just seized power and was imposing communist ways on the country. The new government then began taking land, money and property from some of the families with claims that the property now belongs to the "revolution". His father was imprisoned for speaking out against the Castro regime. Jose, his mother and sister fled to the Swedish embassy for safety and stayed there until papers were set for asylumin the US. After turning over most everything they owned to the Cuban government including all their land in Cuba, Jose's father and grandfather were released from prison. Completely broke and destitute, the family escaped.
The beginning years in America were not easy for Wejebe family. With a total of 10 family members living in a two-bedroom house and barely enough money to get by, life was challenging during Jose's younger years. However, growing up in Miami, Florida, the tropical locale was a integral turning point for the beginning of Jose's marine based career and life. At age eight, his father first took him out on the waters of Biscayne Bay and taught him to fish. His mother purchased him a mask and fins. What he saw underwater changed his life and perspective on the world forever. There was a whole new world for him to discover and since then, he never stopped exploring.

The Spanish Fly catches and releases a rare sight that the IGFA confirms is leucistic, not albino.

3/23/2014

Over 20 miles off Los Suenos, Costa Rica, the 43-foot custom Spanish Fly caught and released something that seemed to be new to science: a 300-pound "albino" blue marlin.

Well, guess what? It cannot be confirmed as an "albino" blue marlin. Not trying to put a damper on what has been claimed as the unicorn of the sea. No matter what science says, it's a rare sight. The IGFA has made a statement that corrects quite a few publications and reports out there speculating on the newfound billfish as albino.

"Although common names for marlin generally focus on color (e.g., black marlin, blue marlin, white marlin, etc.) color is typically not the best feature to use in identifying billfish. Especially in this case! The shape and size of this marlin’s dorsal and pectoral fins clearly indicate that it’s a blue marlin even though it’s not blue at all. The eye color - black, rather than red or pink - also indicates that this marlin is leucistic (which is a reduction in pigmentation) rather than albino."

Even though it has turned out to be a leucistic blue marlin, it still was a good day for science and fishing. But, it was a heck of a day to take off for Capt. Daniel Espinoza Jimenez, instead Capt. Juan Carlos Fallas Zamora ran the boat. Others aboard the Spanish Fly, mates Carlos Espinoza Jimenez and Robert Salinas along with clients Bob and Karen Weaver.

First mate Carlos Espinoza Jimenez says they used light tackle with 30 pound test and teasers, while warming up for the Los Suenos Triple Crown Tournament. The Spanish Fly is competing tomorrow in the third stage of the tournament. I'm sure the talk of the tournament, let alone the entire fishing world, will be this crew's story. So much for first place.

Mako Mania Openiong Today

(June 7, 2013) Anglers will head offshore in search of mako and thresher sharks and bluefish during the 17th annual Mako Mania Shark Tournament, which starts today, Friday, and concludes Sunday.

The Mako Mania event, presented by Bahia Marina Tournaments, is the first major offshore fishing tournament of the season.

It was a cold winter and cool spring in Ocean City and anglers are ready for warm weather and the 2013 tournament fishing season to get under way.

The first mako of the season, a 138-pounder, was caught on May 10 by Wayne Mull aboard the Restless Lady. A number of makos have been boated since.

“Mako fishing has been pretty good,” Mako Mania co-organizer Earl Conley said last week. “I hear there’s lots of bluefish. If there’s lots of bait, there will be lots of [makos].”
