The Mako Mania is a mako shark tournament with added entry levels for bluefish and thresher shark. This tournament is traditionally the start of the tournament season in Ocean City. Mako mania was started in 1996 by Captain Steve Harman and continues to grow every year. The Mako Mania is unique in that boats of all sizes can compete with decent weather. Daily weigh-ins will be held at Bahia Marina from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm each fishing day. Stop by, have a beverage and something to eat at FishTales while watching the sharks come in to be weighed. This year the Moore Bills will compete for both Shark and Blues.

The National Marine Fisheries Service is taking two actions regarding the recreational Atlantic bluefin tuna (BFT) Angling category fishery: (1) closure of the southern area trophy BFT fishery (73" or greater) effective 11:30 p.m. local time, Thursday, April 4, through the remainder of 2013; and (2) adjustment of the daily retention limit that applies to the HMS Charter/Headboat category (when fishing recreationally), effective April 4, 2013, from 1 fish measuring 27 to <73" to 1 school BFT (27 to <47”) and 1 large school/small medium BFT (47 to <73”) per vessel. The recreational daily retention limit that applies to HMS Angling category vessels remains at the default level of 1 school, large school, or small medium BFT (27 to <73”) per vessel. Jeff Merrill called Tuesday the best bigeye tuna day in the 21-year history of the Mid-Atlantic $500,000 Tournament. The Canyon Runner from Point Pleasant, fresh off a big money second place tuna performance in the White Marlin Open at Ocean City, Md. did it again with bigeyes as they weighed two of 162 and 181 pounds -- good enough to win the tuna division some years, but not enough to even get in the money this time. Reel Chaos boated bigeyes of 144 and 233 pounds, with the latter taking over first that could be worth $182,346 if it stands up. Barry Wishnak's Miss Annie moved into second with a 224-pound bigeye. Walt Harmstead's Tra Sea Ann from Brielle stands third in tuna with a 213-pounder, and also boated others of 155 and 195 pounds. The biggest money goes to white marlin, and the top three spots already have leaders. Reelentless brought a 79-pound white into the satelitte port of Ocean City Md. to take the lead for $766,733. Lighten Up returned to the same port with a 70-pounder that could be worth $239,193 for second. Motivation sailed out of Cape May for their 67-pound white that sits in third and could be worth $190,213. No blue marlin or wahoo were weighed, but Moore Bills took a big lead in dolphin with a 43-pounder. The 39th Annual White Marlin Open has come to a close with William Woody on the "Blew Bayou" taking home
$1.4 MILLION in prize money for his 72 pound white marlin! Day 2 of the White Marlin the fleet was numbered at 243! Check out the live camera to see the action at home starting at 4:00pm. White Marlin Open Live Feed Day 2 Wrap Up Tuesday was the first fishing day for 243 boats of the 253 registered boats competing for $2,300,000 in prize money. The first boats came with the 6:00pm bridge, and the Milling Around weighed a yellowfin tuna of 61 lbs. Next, the Stream Weaver weighed a 68.5 pound white marlin that was just 1 1/2 pounds under the 70 pound minimum. The A-Lure made the 6:30 bridge and weighed a monster 202.5 lbs big eye tuna that jumped into first place worth over $300,000. Next, the Amarula Sun, (a 82' Viking big enough to block the sun) weighed a 66.5 pound wahoo good for first place. The top spot was short lived however as then the Canyon Runner arrived just after 7:00 pm with 2 fish that caused a swing of over $250,000 in prize money. The first, a 70.5 pound jumped to first and now holds $16,000. It was the second fish, a 236 pound big eye that electrified the crowd and gives angler Dave Dunton from Milford, OH a shot at over $324,000... The 39th Annual White Marlin Open got underway officially this morning and this year's edition has seen a slight increase in boat participation, from 237 last year to 254 this year.
